Natural- but not too bare. Wears makeup- but not too cakey. Sexy- but not too revealing. Unique- but not yourself. Double standards like these are the rules of our society, but not the rules of Lottie Tomlinson.
19-year-old MUA Lottie Tomlinson’s only beauty rule is that there are no rules. She implores those looking up to her to recognize their own beauty and not compare themselves to others. However, the stigma surrounding Lottie due to her brother’s success makes it hard for people to hear her important message.
Typical beauty standards for woman have been deeply embedded in society. Thus our society is not willing to get to know Lottie past her modifications (a major criticism they give to Lottie but not to other celebrities who do the exact same thing.)
As ‘plastic’ as people make Lottie out to be, she’s actually very unique and recognizable in her style. She is always experimenting with makeup, hair and fashion. Lottie proves that beauty standards are unnecessary and overrated.
Lottie gets slammed every day for dressing the way she dresses or the way she does her makeup, but people overlook the fact that Lottie is being something that society tries to hide:
She’s being real.
Yes, she uses lash extensions, lip fillers, makeup and fake tans, but this doesn’t take away from the fact that she is still trying to represent and express herself to the world the way she wants to be seen. She doesn’t wear makeup for “attention”, Lottie wears so she can show the world her artistic and creative abilities through her looks. Who cares what she wears!? The important thing is that she is doing things on her own terms and NOT because society tells her to.
So forget the beauty standards that are forced fed to you everyday through social media. The only rule you need to know (thanks to Lottie) is that there are no rules. Be yourself, no matter who you decide that is. -Gemma
